Hammer and Hand’s latest exhibition is taking a literary, indeed poetic slant, with members of the collective finding inspiration from the words of the South Australian poet, Graeme Catt. His poem, “The inverted world”, lists a reversal of situations where anything is possible: “the sky flies in the bird” to “the mind drifts across a thought” and it is these possibilities that have been given a visual representation in metal by the artists.
Works include intriguing upside down gem settings by Julian de Saxe, exquisitely crafted pieces by Jen Banks that reflect each line of the poem, Bruce Pringle’s humorous take on the hidden world of the mask wearer, Rachel Horsfall’s whimsical creations of dragons and upside down worlds, WiHihanni’s use of Japanese marbles placed in silver eyes to create a visual complexity and Lucille Atkins’ statement in metal about the windows that frame women. All pieces will be for sale at the exhibition along with booklets of Graeme Catt’s poetry.
Join us for a night of visual delight and literary splendor as well as the usual Hammer and Hand specialties of live music, nibbles, drinks, open fire and good company.
Friday 4th May, 5pm – 8pm, 1/4 Ti Tree Place, Arts & Industry Estate, Byron Bay.

…a chap came in and was looking at a pair of earrings for his wife and wanted to know what they might look like on; so in all innocence asked if I had my ears pierced (I’m assuming that somewhere out there, there is a female jeweller who doesn’t?). Would be that on this particular day, I had my hair down…and instead of replying, I just lifted up my thatched tresses with a wry smile and asked him to take his pick…..of the mass of metal studs, chains, rings and balls that decorate, very musically, my ears.
Perhaps you had to be there – and in case you haven’t – here is a selection of earrings I have created since my last earrings post.
(It was quite a vicarious thing to create the clip on earrings for my Aunty-out-law recently, I can tell you)!
Enjoy
