Some Days Are Diamonds … And Some Ain’t ! Hot Cast Gem Attempt.

I heard that some gems.. Ruby, Sapphire and Diamonds can be cast directly into hot metal…
So I had a go!.. No change to their colour but…
I think the shrinking of the metal as it cooled caused them to crack…Also experimenting with Core-Casting..

Cope and Drag packed..
Learning to “Core-Cast”
Pretty little Ruby

Ruby in site ready nearing it’s demise
Make-shift core..
The poor ol’e Ruby

Ruby Ring in a tight spot
Digging out the Ruby Ring
Cracked up Sapphire

Seems they use a lower melting temp metal.
Long time ago the cast in place pendants I had to work on were verrrrry low melting temp alloys.

Perhaps thicker rings retain the heat more?
Maybe a test using thin pendants instead would give better results.

Cheers
William
